Upon arrival at Ben Gurion airport, you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel in Tel Aviv. Overnight in Tel Aviv.
We depart Tel Aviv via Ashdod and Ashkelon for a short visit to Beersheba, the largest city the Negev desert in southern Israel. We continue via Arad to Masada, the ancient hilltop fortress where the Zealots made their last stand against the Romans before committing mass suicide in 73 AD. We ascend and descend by cable car. Continuing on to the Dead Sea**, we have the opportunity to cover ourselves with its mineral-rich mud and float on the water. We then proceed to Jerusalem, via Ein Gedi and Kalya. Overnight in Jerusalem.
We start the day by visiting Mount Scopus for panoramic views of Jerusalem. From there we continue to the Church of the Agony and the Garden of Gethsemane. We go on to the Israel Museum’s Shrine of the Book with the famous Dead Sea scrolls. Here we also see the outstanding Model of the Herodian city of Jerusalem, dating back to the time of the Second Temple. Afterwards, we spend some time at Yad Vashem, the memorial to millions of Jews who died in the Holocaust. In the afternoon we visit the picturesque village of Ein Kerem, the traditional birth place of John the Baptist. Overnight in Jerusalem.
We enter the walled Old City of Jerusalem to visit the Western Wall, the Jewish Quarter, the Temple area and the colourful Shuk. We take a walk along the Via Dolorosa and the Stations of the Cross, en route to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. We continue to Mount Zion where we visit the tomb of King David, the Room of the Last Supper and Dormition Abbey. In the afternoon we drive to Bethlehem* where we visit the Church of the Nativity. Overnight in Jerusalem.
After breakfast we leave Jerusalem and drive north, passing by Jericho, the world’s oldest city. We travel to Bet Shean through the Jordan Valley, visiting the excavations of this wonderfully preserved Roman city. We continue to Tiberias, the old centre of Jewish learning. Then we make our way along the shores of the Sea of Galilee to Capernaum to visit the ruins of the ancient synagogue and Peter’s house. Overnight in Kibbutz hotel.
The day begins with a drive to the Golan Heights, passing by the Druze villages. We visit a former Syrian fortification on the Heights, via Banias, source of the Jordan River. From there we proceed via the Hula Valley to Safed, the highest city in the Galilee area, for a walk through the mystic alleys, a visit to a synagogue and the artists’ colony. The last stop of the day is Nazareth where we visit the Christian holy sites. Overnight in Kibbutz hotel.
After breakfast we drive west to Acre, home of the famous Crusader stronghold and medieval fortifications. We then make our way to Haifa, for a tour of the city, including the Baha’i Shrine and Persian Garden. From here we enjoy a panoramic view of Mount Carmel and Haifa Bay. Then we proceed down the coast to Caesarea to visit the ancient port, including the Roman Amphitheatre and the Hippodrome. We then continue to Tel Aviv-Jaffa for a short city tour and to our hotel. Overnight in Tel Aviv.
We depart Tel Aviv and cross the border to enter Jordan. We proceed to Jerash located 45 kilometres north of Amman in the heights of the Gilad. We visit the ancient Roman city with colonnaded streets, the baths and much more. Later we continue to Amman for a panoramic city tour of the Jordanian capital. Overnight in Amman.
After an early breakfast, we leave our hotel and travel south on the road to Wadi Musa, the nearest town to the archaeological site of Petra. We enter the site of Petra and walk, or ride on horseback, as far as the Siq, which is a canyon leading into ancient Petra. We walk the 1200 metres through the Siq to the red rock city, the ancient capital of the Nabateans. We visit spectacular carved structures such as the Treasury, then see the field of tombs, obelisks and the Al Madhbah altar. From Al Madhbah we can view the whole the city. Afterwards we return to Wadi Musa. Overnight in Petra.
We drive to Madaba to see the mosaic floor map in the remains of the Byzantine church – this is the oldest surviving original cartographic depiction of Israel and Jerusalem. From here we go to Mount Nebo, from which Moses viewed the Promised Land. Mount Nebo offers a great view of the Jordan Valley, Jericho and the Dead Sea. We return to the border and make our way back to Tel Aviv. Overnight in Tel Aviv.
We transfer to Ben Gurion airport for our flight home.
